The Ministry of Music ‘I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.’ Music is an integral part of Orthodox worship. The services are almost entirely sung, rather than spoken or recited. The choir assumes the important role of leading the congregation in praise and thanksgiving, fulfilling the injunction to “sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness” (Colossians, 3:16). Since the Church is the earthly icon of the Heavenly Kingdom, the ministry of the choir is in effect the same work as that of the angels who without ceasing sing their praises before the throne of God. Participation in the choir requires commitment and some sacrifice of one’s time. It is also a form of stewardship, for in putting our talents, however modest, at the service of His Church, we return to the Lord what He has given to us. As a parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, Holy Ascension Orthodox Mission gives preference in its liturgical services to Byzantine chant, the ancient musical tradition of the Church of Antioch. At the same time, we express our unity in faith with all of the Orthodox churches by singing the time-honored music of other, especially Slavic, Orthodox traditions; in addition, because we believe that Orthodoxy is not only of the past but also of the present and future, we also sing works by contemporary composers. Rehearsals are held on Saturdays from 4:30 to 5:45 PM, September through June, followed by Vespers. Consistent, regular attendance at rehearsals and services is an important requirement of continued membership. If you are interested in participating in this important ministry, please speak to the choir director. Click here to listen to our choir sing our Holy Ascension Troparion. |
